about secgan

My work is centred around those natural phenomena that stop me in my tracks, hold my gaze, and mesmerise me. Just as a poet writes their best work in recollection of a visceral moment, I create my landscapes from a personal response to those experiences, in the quiet of my studio, where my visual memory distills these rare encounters into a new reality of paint on canvas.

Not all that is beautiful can be owned. That golden glistening stone pulled from the icy waters of a mountain river or coastal rock pool will dull to grey as it dries. Its beauty melts and drips back through the rippled surface of the flowing water, then still on down it falls onto the riverbed, where it will cloak another stone.

To own one of my landscapes is to relive a moment, a memory, or a fleeting sense of well-being.

If you’ve found your way here from the latest issue of Molton Monthly, welcome. I’m the artist John Secgan, and the gallery is where my process comes to life.

I’d love to show you the stories behind the new pieces currently on the walls. Stop by to browse, ask questions about the techniques I use, or just to say hello.
